Pregnant without insurance – What to do?
I have been contacted twice over the past few weeks by two pregnant women looking for healthcare policies. Tough spot to be in. No international underwriter will accept to cover an existing pregnancy as they consider it a pre-existing condition (a medical condition diagnosed prior to the effective date of the health plan).
So what can you do if you are in this situation?
If you don’t have insurance yet, you still need to get cover for yourself, even if you will not be covered for your pregnancy. This will
(1) cover you for non-pregnancy-related conditions,
(2) facilitate your new-born getting a cover down the road, and,
(3) ensure you do not find yourself in this tough spot a second time.
Next, you need to find yourself a doctor you trust and with whom you arrange for a financing a payment plan. The cost of having a baby varies depending on what part of the world you live in and what type of birth you have. Most doctors, hospitals or clinics can arrange for such facilities.
